We are very proud to announce the full schedule for the second annual Downtown Literary Festival on Sunday, April 13! The festival includes an opening party on Friday April 11 with free drinks and music, new-this-year children’s programming, and a full day of events at the Bowery Poetry Club, Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, and McNally Jackson. And then an after party at Von bar!
Full details at downtownliteraryfestival. Join us on Sunday, April 13 to celebrate the literary culture of downtown New York City!
Justin Taylor and Adam Wilson will be at McNally Jackson throughout the day, doling out literary advice.
At the Bowery Poetry Club, the high noon Fast Talking event features Baratunde Thurston’s How to Be Black, Francine Prose, and James Thurber.
At Housing Works at 2 pm, the Slaughterhouse 90210 event includes stories from Teddy Wayne and Adam Wilson.
And at 3 pm you can hit up the Bowery Poetry Club again to hear Francine Prose talk about the shifting literary landscape of downtown NYC.
Laura (who works with HarperBooks) and Danny first met at an event/reading that Justin Taylor did for Everything Here Is the Best Thing Ever. They went on to date for a few years, and then last weekend Danny proposed! He got Laura’s grandmother’s ring from Laura’s dad, hid it in their well-loved copy of the book that started it all, and surprised her on Saturday morning. Sometimes “Hey, I marked a passage that I think you should read,” turns into “Will you marry me?” and I just can’t stand it.
The best part is obviously the proposal (books! literally bringing people together!) but the second best part is Laura telling this story to Justin’s editor down the hall. Of course you always think that a book is going to change someone’s life, but rarely does your book actually introduce your coworker to her future husband and hide the engagement ring!
short stories on sale!
We’ve partnered with One Story on a short story collection sale for the month of July. Ebooks of some of our favorites—including Justin Taylor’s Everything Here is the Best Thing Ever, pictured at right—are only $1.99 for the whole month. We’ll highlight each book here over the next 30 days, but for now, check out the whole list here!
