it's been a crazy week....
And there’s been no time for Tumblr! We’re preparing for our fall 2012 season while of course also working on the books that are coming out now. One of the things I’ve been working on lately that is closest to my heart is the e-book launch of the full Tales of the City series by Armistead Maupin.
I started the series in college, long before I worked in publishing, and I would be...

By Laura Kasischke
Once there was a woman who laughed for years uncontrollably after a stroke.
Once there was a child who woke after surgery to find his parents were impostors.

A Review: The Ruins of Us by Keija Parssinen
lovely review of THE RUINS OF US, a lovely book.
booksmatter:
For those who choose to remove themselves from the Western world, the expatriate experience is singular and, often, inexpressible. The experience varies by country and the time spent there, by finances and by open-mindedness, but the expatriate will always be an outsider. After a year of wandering village markets in Africa and...

Is that part of its appeal?-What do you use your tumblr for?- And does it have a different purpose than other...
we have another fan of THE MOMENT
“I’m a huge fan of Larry Smith and the books that he puts out, as well as Smith Magazine. I was delighted to see this book on my desk a little while back, and I’ve been sipping from it ever since. I can only read a few of the “moments” at a time, because they are sometimes profound, or heart-breaking, or hilarious, and they all need to be savored. I’ve also...

is reading a book you can’t share with anyone because it’s not coming out for eight more months. It’s National Short Story Day in the UK today because it’s the shortest day of the year. My favorite short story ever is Mona Simpson’s “Lawns,” which you can read the first page of here. best of the backlist: lost girls and love hotels
I read Lost Girls and Love Hotels before I ever worked for Harper Perennial, and even years later it’s still one of my favorites. Sexy (and I don’t say that lightly), thrilling, and ultimately sad, it’s the story of a girl losing herself in Tokyo. If even one more person reads it, I’ll be thrilled.

In our free excerpt, Jennifer Egan, Dave Eggers, Elizabeth Gilbert, and other writers share...
bookshelf zero
Have you ever reached bookshelf zero—that state where you own no unread books?
Is it even possible to reach bookshelf zero when you work in publishing, and there’s always next season’s manuscripts you could be reading?
I asked this question on my personal twitter and was surprised at the answers. With one exception, most people expressed shock that I had once reached bookshelf...
